A Journey Through Lakes, Forests and Timeless Towns

If there is one region in Czechia that feels like a storybook brought to life, it is South Bohemia. Quiet ponds reflecting the sky, deep forests, medieval towns and forgotten villages create a landscape that feels both peaceful and deeply authentic.

This road trip takes you on a circular journey through South Bohemia, connecting hidden gems, historic towns and natural wonders into one unforgettable experience.

We leave Prague early in the morning, taking the D4 highway south, and after about 1 hour and 15 minutes, we arrive in the historic town of Písek.

Here, the Otava River flows gently beneath the oldest stone bridge in Czechia, built in the 13th century. Long before Prague's Charles Bridge was completed, this crossing already connected important trade routes. According to legend, eggs were added to the mortar to strengthen its structure — a story that adds a touch of folklore to its solid stone presence.

Continuing south for about 45 minutes, we reach one of the most atmospheric places in the region

Zvíkov Castle, standing proudly above the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers.

The castle, dating back to the 13th century, was once considered one of the most important royal residences in Bohemia. Yet it is also surrounded by mystery. Stories speak of strange sounds at night and a "devil's tower", where something unexplained was once believed to dwell.

Following the Vltava River further south for about an hour, the landscape begins to open, and we arrive in Český Krumlov.

Few places in Europe feel as complete and untouched as this town. The castle rises above a bend in the river, and from the Cloak Bridge, you can see rooftops stretching into the distance like a painting.

Walking through its narrow streets feels like stepping into another century.

A short drive brings us to Holašovice, a small village unlike any other.

Listed as a UNESCO site, Holašovice is famous for its "South Bohemian Baroque" farmhouses, forming a perfect rural square. It is quiet, almost frozen in time, and offers a glimpse into traditional countryside life.

From here, we head north into the forests for about 45 minutes, reaching the edge of the Boubín Primeval Forest.

One of the oldest preserved forests in Central Europe, Boubín feels untouched. Walking beneath its towering trees, some over 300 years old, you begin to understand what the landscape looked like before modern civilization.

Emerging from the forest, we drive for about 40 minutes to the charming town of Prachatice.

Once a wealthy trading center on the Golden Salt Route, Prachatice still preserves beautifully

decorated Renaissance houses. The colorful façades tell stories of merchants and travelers who once passed through this region.

A short drive brings us to Volyně, a peaceful town that many travelers overlook.

Its quiet square and gentle atmosphere make it a perfect place to slow down. Nearby lies Dobrš, a tiny village hidden in the rolling countryside, where time seems to stand still.

Turning east, we continue for about 1.5 hours to reach Třeboň, a town surrounded by an intricate system of ponds.

This landscape, shaped by centuries of fish farming, creates a unique harmony between nature and human ingenuity. The town itself feels elegant yet relaxed, ideal for a slow afternoon walk.

Continuing northeast for about 1 hour, we arrive in Jindřichův Hradec, dominated by one of the largest castle complexes in Czechia.

The town blends history and atmosphere, with a castle overlooking a lake and narrow streets full of charm.

From here, we head south for about 1.5 hours to reach Rožmberk Castle, perched above the Vltava River.

This romantic castle is closely connected with the powerful Rosenberg family. According to legend, it is haunted by the "White Lady", one of the most famous ghosts in Czech history.

Finally, we continue to Lipno, about 45 minutes away, where the landscape opens into wide views of water and forest.

The Lipno reservoir offers a completely different atmosphere — peaceful, spacious and perfect for reflection at the end of the journey.
