Where to Go in the Czech Republic If You Already Know Prague

Prague Deserves Its Fame – But It's Not the Whole Story

Prague regularly ranks among the most beautiful cities in Europe – and often even in the world. Its popularity is well deserved. It is an extraordinary city with a unique atmosphere, architecture, and history.

However, this global fame has one side effect: it often overshadows many other remarkable places in the Czech Republic. In a country of just 11 million people, this means that travelers who visit for only a few days often leave without seeing anything beyond Prague.

Some trips include well-known destinations like Český Krumlov or the spa town of Karlovy Vary. But the Czech Republic is not a country of one or two famous places. In reality, it is a country of hundreds of historic towns, castles, and landscapes that simply never became international icons.

A Country of Small Towns, Not Just Big Highlights

The Czech Republic is a country of small and medium-sized towns. With a population of around 11 million, it has more than 600 towns and cities. Most of them were founded in the Middle Ages.

Because large parts of the country were spared the worst destruction of modern wars, many of these towns have preserved their historic centers. In smaller towns especially, there is often a strong sense of continuity. Families have lived there for generations, and people tend to have a deep personal connection to their town.

This has a visible impact. The historic centers are well cared for, and the atmosphere feels genuine. In places like these, visitors can still experience something that has disappeared from many major tourist centers: everyday life unfolding in historic surroundings.

Castles, Palaces, and Remarkable Density

Beyond towns and cities, the Czech Republic is home to approximately 500–600 castles and castle ruins, around 2,000 palaces, and thousands of churches and other historical landmarks.

Thanks to the country's relatively small size, dense road and railway network, and reliable public transport, it is possible to explore a surprising number of places even during a one-week trip – without rushing.

Many visitors return home genuinely surprised, realizing that the Czech Republic is far more than just Prague.

Why Planning Matters More Than You Might Expect

Choosing where to go is not as simple as picking a nice photo online and taking a day trip from Prague.

It is easy to discover too late that:

 public transport connections are slow or complicated,

 the historic buildings look great in photos but form only a tiny part of an otherwise unremarkable town,

 or the place simply does not match your expectations or travel style.

For a truly enjoyable experience, accommodation matters as well. Staying in a place where you feel comfortable – and knowing where to eat well – makes a significant difference.

Local Knowledge Makes the Difference

Creating a well-balanced trip that you will remember for years requires local knowledge. It is a skill that combines geography, logistics, atmosphere, and personal preferences.

This is exactly what we do. We design trips that allow you to experience the Czech Republic in a relaxed, meaningful way – beyond the obvious stops.
